Among other soon-to-be announced news for Culture Crawl 2013, this year’s event will feature a theme.
The theme for Culture Crawl 2013 is The River. The River has a strong presence in Rahway. The Rahway River and its branches run through many neighborhoods in the town. Our park system is built around the rivers and lakes. The River symbolizes life, nature, beauty, and recreation, but can also represent tremendous power, danger, and destruction (as we experienced during the devastating storms of Irene and Sandy). River pollution, sustainability, land use and water resources are critical global issues. The River impacts our daily lives and our stewardship will influence the lives of generations to come.
The theme provides inspiration for the creation of new work, performances and music capturing the movement, mood, and presence of the ever-changing River.
Culture Crawl 2013 is quickly approaching! This year’s festival will be held on Friday, October 4, 2013. More details on participating venues, artists and performers to come very soon!
We’re pleased to announce that we’re working on a new video about Culture Crawl, which will be released next year. As soon as it’s ready, we’ll share it on Facebook, YouTube and the website!
In the meantime, check out some of these videos, photos, and articles capturing the spirit of Culture Crawl 2012.
We’d like to send a huge thank you to our sponsors, our participants, and to all of those who “Crawled” around downtown Rahway to find dozens of displays of art.
Culture Crawl featured 61 events at over 35 locations throughout downtown Rahway. Forty-five venues that included arts organizations, non-profits, retail shops, restaurants, artist studios, and other businesses opened their doors to celebrate the City of Rahway as a fast emerging arts destination in the most interesting and active cultural event of the year.
Produced by Rahway Arts District, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to establishing Rahway as a regional hub for arts and culture, in partnership with the City of Rahway and the Rahway business community, Culture Crawl saw the attendance of approximately 800 “Crawlers”. Such a tremendous response from the community has ensured that this will become an annual event.
Highlights of the evening included:
-A beautiful performance by Ballets with a Twist on the Mainstage at UCPAC
-The opening reception of STARDUST, a group art exhibit at 1591 gallery
-Community haiku poetry writing and scavenger hunt by Guerilla Haiku Movement that left the Train Station Plaza covered in awesome poems
-A site-specific sound installation by A.P. Vague under the Irving Street train trestle
-A performance of jazz compositions by Jean-Michel Pilc at RSI Bank
-A Rahway “Battle of the Bands” on Main Street
Appetizer and drink specials, raffles, giveaways, and other special promotions were available to Culture Crawlers with the presentation of a CULTURE CRAWL map at Aria Bistro & Bar at Hotel Indigo, Flynn’s Irish Pub & Steakhouse, Wicked Flame, Luciano’s Ristorante & Lounge, Gino’s Pizzeria, The Waiting Room, and On’ Ja Salon.
Look for us in 2013 where we’ll be even Bigger and Better!
